What Is The Best Language To Learn Next After French Language?

by admin on October 7, 2009

I’m currently learning French at intermediate level and was thinking of picking up another foreign language. For those who speak this beautiful language out there, what is the best language to learn next after French and why?
I would like to learn something similiar to the French language.

French is one of the Romance languages, that is, languages spread from the influence of the Roman Empire on areas of Europe. Soldiers and others settled and mixed with the natives in various parts of Europe and the Latin dialects they spoke developed differently, into French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Rumanian, and other languages with minority populations in existing countries like Provençal, Catalan, and Rumantsch (in Switzerland). So because the words in these languages are mainly (but not always!) derived from Latin roots, you stand a chance of learning any of these more easily.

OK, everyone is a bit wrong. 1 - the most spoken languages are: Mandarin Chinese, Spanish and English. And 2 - French is nothing like Arabic, some French words derive from Arabic, however and some French is spoken in Arabic countries. I’d either go with Spanish because it’s similar to French and opens up most of South America and some Asian counties for you to use it in as well as Spain (compared to French which isn’t as widely spoken) or for something a bit trickier but certainly worth it - Mandarin Chinese. It’s not too hard, quite fun and will certainly be useful in the future.

Spanish or Italian seem to be pretty good choices for you as both of those and French are all Romance languages, ergo they’re similar. I’ve noticed that I can understand the odd word of
Spanish or Italian thanks to my knowledge in French.
Maybe at a later stage you could give a completely different language a go? After French (which I’m still learning!), I decided to do Japanese. At a later stage, I also want to learn a Scandinavian language such as Finnish or Norwegian.
But best of luck with whatever you decide

Spanish would be a good pick as it has many similarities with French. You’d probably find it fairly easy to learn with your knowledge of French. Also with the growing popularity of Spanish in N. America this would be a very wise choice.
Bonne chance!

My French teacher said she is currently learning Spanish and it is a breeze for her. She says there are several similarities between the two languages and it would be very easy to make the transition from French to Spanish.

Spanish would be a logical next language for you, although it really depends what you’re actually going to use.

Spanish would be useful, as it is the 4th most spoken language in the world. And Hindi/Urud is the 2nd.
