How To Learn Portuguese And How Long Should I Take?

by admin on October 12, 2009

My dad’s side of the family is Portuguese and I am interested in learning it. I don’t see my dad that often, so I can’t learn it from him. I am would like FREE sites to teach me to speak semi-fluent Portuguese. I will learn fluency from my family because it will never come from a website.

If you want to learn the portuguese of Portugal, for family reasons, I tell you it will be very hard. But if you want to learn portuguese seriously, you should learn brazilian-portuguese, because it, besides being easier than that of Portugal, is much more widespread around the world.
Although those two languages are commonly called “portuguese”, both are quite different. For exemple: a portuguese person can undestand a brazilian speaking; but for a brazilian it is very hard to undestand a portuguese speaking. Finally, the spelling rules are also different from each other.
Websites for Brazilian-portuguese are easy to find; I havent seen any for Portuguese-portuguese though. Good Luck!

Olá, Zack!
That is great that you want to learn European Portuguese. It is truly a lovely language.
I moderate a fun–and free!–discussion group here at Yahoo to help students learn português. We have membros from all over the world, ranging from absolute beginners to native speakers, who help the students by conversing with them and demonstrating the language in action. This is supplemented by other group activities. Students learn at their own pace and have access to free private and semi-private tutoring.
As a foreign language teacher, I enjoy looking for all sorts of resources over the web as well as designing learning materials myself and incorporating both into lessons. And I enjoy helping students, not only to communicate with others, but also to *think* in português and to unlock the mysteries and discovery the beauty within português and Lusophone cultures. This is my labor of love to, in some small way, repay all the kindnesses the Portuguese people have shown me.
I’ve come across some *excellent* resources for European Portuguese. Here’s my latest big find:http://www.europensemble.eu/
(Click on “En” to change the language of the site to English, then on “Enter”. After you subscribe–for free–you’ll be able to pick your language of study: Português de Portugal, which is, btw, spoken not only in Portugal, but also in Africa and Asia. It is also português de Portugal that is an official language of the EU.)
Like what you see? There’s plenty more in the group:http://groups.yahoo.com/group/awfulportu…

With all due respect to the other posters (Filipa S e foi mas voltou)… Simply put, I disagree with them on every level.
PS: I applaud your reasons for wanting to learn português, Zack :)
